GEBCO One Minute Grid - ESRI Grid
General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans - GEBCO One Minute Grid
Released: 2003, updated: 2008.
The GEBCO One Minute Grid is an ArcInfo Grid version (one arc-minute resolution) of the original data source gridone.grd NetCDF file which is part of the GEBCO Digital Atlas (GDA) Centenary Edition.
The GEBCO One Minute Grid is largely based on the most recent set of bathymetric contours contained within the GEBCO Digital Atlas. Additional control contours and sounding data were used in many regions, particularly shallow water areas and semi-enclosed seas, to constrain the gridding process. It is a continuous digital terrain model for ocean and land, with land elevations derived from the Global Land One-km Base Elevation (GLOBE) database.
It must be stressed that although the GEBCO One Minute Grid is presented at one minute intervals of latitude and longitude, this does not imply that knowledge is available on sea floor depth at this resolution. It is important to note that, in most places, many miles exist between adjacent ship tracklines and that the grid is an interpolation based upon the input data.

The source should be acknowledged as 'Reproduced from the GEBCO Digital Atlas published by the British Oceanographic Data Centre on behalf of IOC and IHO, 2003'. The production of the GEBCO Digital Atlas is the culmination of a community based endeavour involving numerous scientists and hydrographers across the world who have devoted much of their time and effort, often on a voluntary basis. For the most part, this endeavour was stimulated by a wish to create an authoritative, high quality bathymetry of the world's oceans for the benefit of humanity. The GEBCO community does not wish the contents of the GEBCO Digital Atlas, either in whole or in part, to be used for commercial gain and requests that any monies accruing from sales of the GDA CDROM set should be reinvested in the further development of GEBCO. Copying of the data from the GEBCO Digital Atlas in digital form for dissemination to third parties is prohibited without prior written permission from the British Oceanographic Data Centre. Reproduction for resale or for use in a commercial product or for any other commercial purpose is prohibited without the prior written permission of the copyright holders. In the first instance, any request for such permission should be addressed to the British Oceanographic Data Centre and should include a clear statement of the purpose for which the material will be used and the manner in which it will be reproduced. In the case of commercial activities, consideration will always be given to the possibility of making an appropriate charge, the benefits from which will be used for the further development of GEBCO. The GEBCO One Minute Grid is an ArcInfo Grid version of the original data source gridone.grd NetCDF file.
GEBCO is essentially a deep ocean product and does not include detailed bathymetry for shallow shelf waters. Even to the present day, most areas of the world's oceans have not been fully surveyed and, for the most part, bathymetric mapping is an interpretation based on random tracklines of data from many different sources. The quality and coverage of data from these sources is highly variable. Although the GEBCO grid is presented at one minute intervals of latitude and longitude, this does not imply that knowledge is available on seafloor depth at this resolution - the depth in most one minute squares of the world's oceans has yet to be measured.
