Statement

Based on the observation that the flow of fishermen's declarations alone did not provide exhaustive information on fishing activity, the SIH developed a method for exhaustive monitoring of all vessels registered in the national register of the Community fishing fleet (FPC), consisting of reconstructing the activity schedules of professional fishing vessels in metropolitan and overseas France each year. The aim here is to have minimal but exhaustive information on the activity of vessels.

There is no sampling plan, all vessels in the FPC are surveyed.

• Specification of data type:

The data is collected by direct or indirect survey and provides information on the monthly activity of the vessel.

• Parameter(s) observed or measured :

- Whether the vessel was active or not, and if so, the list of the fishing gears practised (by fishing gear, we mean the use of a gear to catch one or more target species in a given fishing area) and their characteristics (mesh size and dimensions).

- The main port.

- The average number of people on board.

- The number of days at sea or fishing.

• Resolution of the parameter(s):

The data is banked by vessel and year.

For each given month, the fishing profession practised is completed by the fishing area known at the finest scale: statistical rectangle, statistical sub-rectangle or statistical unit.
