Porsmilin profiles
Beach profiling using RTK-GNSS (survey method GPS) represents one of the most convenient method for frequent resurveys. Since 2003, profile surveys have been (approx.) weekly for the first year, fortnightly between January 2004 and June 2005, and near-monthly thereafter, with occasional gaps in the data due to equipment misfunctioning and maintenance. Trimble 5700/5800 and Topcon Hiper V GPS systems were used for data acquisition.

- Statement

Profile surveys consists in measuring a central cross-shore profile line from the dune ridge down to the low-tide waterline using high-accuracy RTK-GNSS in rapid-static mode (10 s averaging at 10 Hz) using mobile GNSS units mounted on a pole equipped with a bubble level. The cross-shore spacing between survey points is adapted to the terrain morphology, ranging from near-continuous (i.e., approximately 0.1 m) where complex up to a few metres in linear and morphologically simple areas.
- Description
-
To facilitate reuse of the data, profiles initially formatted as three-column x, y, z matrices were further processed to be expressed in terms of vertical elevation versus cross-shore distance from a common starting point (profile head) at a standard sampling rate of 0.5 m. This was done through linear interpolation onto the best-fit transect line determined by least-squares (y = 2.072 x + 6560.283, R2 = 0.99, n = 253). Profile head position is 132011.840 m East by 6833840.188 m North. Orientation of beach profiles is 205.763°, where 180° indicates South counted clockwise.
- Rationale
-
Data processing
- Description
-
Performed concurrently with profile surveys, measurement of survey marks enabled estimating georeferencing precision over the period 2003-2019. It shows precisions at one standard deviation of 0.012 m, 0.015 m and 0.035 m along x (east), y (north) and z (elevation) directions, respectively.
- Rationale
-
Quality verification
- Description
-
Profiles are provided as individual tabulation delimited text (.txt) files with two columns (chainage and elevation), with the following naming convention: yyyymmdd_Porsmilin_GPS_Dist_IGN69_0.5, where yyyymmdd is the survey date.
