Germination of 93 acorn batches from 12 European Quercus species

We present a dataset of 93 acorn batches from 12 European Quercus species on which 8-week germination tests have been carried out. In addtion, seed mass (g) and moisture content were measured. Information on collection locations, methods and dates is provided in order to correctly analyze the data. This database can be used to: (1) analysing the differences between species or populations at acorn/germination level, (2) assess the effect of acorn weight and moisture content on germination probability, (3) contrast the results of seeding in the field with the intrinsic germination capacity of acorns and, therefore, assess the limitation on germination imposed by environmental factors in the field, (4) help estimate the amount of acorns required to obtain a certain number of seedlings for both, direct-seeding operations in the field and sowing in the nursery.

Purpose

The database had the original purpose of contrasting the results of seeding in the field with the intrinsic germination capacity of acorns from the same batches, and therefore, to assess the limitation on germination imposed by environmental factors in an ongoing experiment (Leverkus et al. 2021). But this database may also prove valuable for other studies, for instance to analyse the differences between species or populations and the effect of acorn weight and moisture content on germination probability. Additionally, for direct-seeding operations in the field or sowing in the nursery, data on germination potential may help estimate the quantity of acorns required to obtain a certain number of seedlings.
