Oceanographic cruises - Observations for fisheries monitoring
The observation of ecosystems by Ifremer's Fisheries Information System (SIH) is based on a network of sea cruises. It aims to assess the state of stocks of the various species fished in France and Europe. It also enables the characterisation of the marine ecosystem in which the populations evolve.
23 scientific cruises take place each year at sea, enabling data to be collected for more than 30 years for the oldest. Thanks to the use of standardised fishing gear, the data acquired each year on board scientific vessels or professional fishing vessels contribute to the calculation of the index of abundance, with thousands of fish taken during timed trawls. The fish are measured and their age is assessed by measuring their otoliths (small bones located in the inner ear of the fish).

On each French coastline, the cruises at sea are governed by Ifremer's SIH (Système d'Informations Halieutiques) methodologies.
The fisheries observation cruises are conducted according to standardised observation protocols specific to each series and available online from the Archimer website, https://archimer.ifremer.fr/
Demersal resources and populations are monitored along the majority of coasts, with the exception of the Côte d'Azur and the western coast of Corsica, the latter two areas having a very narrow continental shelf.
At Ifremer, the first series of standardised observations began in the second half of the 1970s. Each cruise lasts from a few days to more than a month, depending on the objectives and the observation conditions.
The data made available on the SIH website are as follows:

The fisheries monitoring cruises conducted by Ifremer fall into five categories:
- bottom trawling surveys with large vertical openings, intended to observe resources and communities on the plateaus and upper slopes: IBTS, CGFS, EVHOE, MEDITS
- cruises to assess large crustaceans, in particular lobster (trap sampling): CRUSTAFLAM
- cruises targeting benthic species such as scallops (dredging campaigns), clams (Hamon grab in very coastal areas) or juvenile flatfish (beam trawl in very coastal areas): NOURSOM, NOURSEINE, NOURMONT, NOURMANCHE, COMOR, COSB, COPER or shrimps (Guyana)
- cruises targeting small pelagic fish (acoustic and trawling): PELGAS and PELMED
• Sampling plan(s) :
