Europe Seas habitats potentially affected by ship wakes, Jun. 2020
This vector dataset represents the benthic broad habitat types in Europe Seas potentially affected by the ship wakes.
When navigating, the propellers of ships generate a turbulent mixing of the water that can produce sediment re-suspension in soft bottoms of shallow areas. This can increase the turbidity in those areas, affecting the seafloor organisms (especially those that are directly dependent on light, such as aquatic plants). It may also contribute to an increase of the the eutrophication level of the ecosystem (since the turbid waters may become warmer, which may turn into a reduction of dissolved oxygen in water). Finally, turbidity can produce an increase in the inputs of contaminants and microbial pathogens, since those can become attached to the suspended solids.
The dataset has been prepared in the context of the development of the first European Maritime Transport Environmental Report ( https://www.eea.europa.eu/publications/maritime-transport ).

The areas potentially disturbed by ship wakes have been delineated based on the EMODnet Human Activities Vessel Density Map 2017, considering all ships, and taking the year average value. Since, according to literature, the wake induced turbulence can be measured down to 30 metres depth, cells in areas deeper than 30 meters were removed (using EMODnet Digital Bathymetry 2016).
The density values from the EMODnet dataset reflect the number of hours per grid cell (Km2) per month with presence of vessels. Those values were rescaled according to depth:
0-10 m = 100%
10-15 m = 80%
15-20 m = 30 %
20-25 m = 15 %
25-30 m = 5 %
The resulting values are reflected in the field "Intensity".
Finally, the resulting layer was overlapped with the EMODnet Broad-Scale Predictive Habitat Map 2019. From the resulting layer, only the sedimentary substrates habitats were kept.
