Sea Level Observation Network - RONIM 1992
The RONIM projet is the national digital tidal network. RONIM aims to implement and maintain a modern network of tide gauges in the key ports of mainland France and French overseas territories.

The project aims to distribute the network’s data to users both in real-time and non real-time.
Measuring the water level along the coast is important for many reasons: to ensure safe navigation at the entrance to ports and channels, to improve tide predictions and hydrodynamic models, to establish the lowest tide for hydrographic maps, to study changes in the average sea level for the oceans, to contribute to the international GLOSS project, to calibrate Topex-Poséidon, ERS and Jason altimetric radars, to reduce bathymetric surveys, to comprehensively manage the coastline, to statistically study storm surges and low tides and other extreme levels, to provide operational coastal oceanographic forecasts, to study and forewarn of natural disasters (storms and tsunamis).

1992 : RONIM Launched
1998 : 1st radar tide gauge
Since 2001 : Participation in the SONEL which studies average sea levels (www.sonel.org).
2005 : 1st radar tide gauge set up in an overseas territory (6 in 2009)
Since 2006 : Partnership with the Previmer project : www.previmer.org
Since 2007 : Contribution to the tsunami warning system in the Indian ocean (CNATOI)
2009 : Contribution to the implementation of the national tsunami warning centre in the Mediterranean and North-East Atlantic in partnership with the CEA (CRATANEM-CENALT)
2010 : Contribution to the sunami warning system in the Caribbean, in partnership with the IPGP (INTERREG IV TSUAREG project)
2010 : Distribution of water level data on the refmar.shom.fr web portal
2011 : Contribution to the Wave and Submersible Vigilance Programme (VVS) in partnership with Météo France.
2011 : Participation in the HOMONIM project in partnership with Météo France with a view to improving operational coastal hydrodynamic modelling tools used to minimize and prevent risks.
Number of observation or measurement points : 43 tide gauges have been installed to date (11/10/2012) with 8 in overseas territories, 1 in Monaco and one in the port of Toamasina (Madagascar). 6 additional tide gauges will be installed between now and 2018.
Raw (non-validated) data sampled every 10 minutes is stored in an acquisition centre and transferred daily, via the telephone network, to the SHOM. Every three months, the SHOM validates and archives this sampled data and makes it available.
In parallel, the raw (non-validated) data sampled every minute is transferred in real-time from the tide gauge to the Internet (REFMAR portal), or to meteorological satellites when the contribute to a warning system (Submersible Vigilance Programme (VVS) in partnership with Météo France, National Tsunami Warning System for the Mediterranean and North-East Atlantic with the CEA, etc.).
- Description
-
In 1992, the SHOM decided to implement a network of permanent tide gauges along the French coast, known as digital coastal tide gauges (MCN).
MCN is equipped with a radar gauge, places above the water surface. The tide gauge measures the water level by emitting a short series of impulses and detecting the reflected signal. The measurement is then averaged at the acquisition centre and sent to the SHOM in real-time.

Measurements from the RONIM network (raw data in real-time which is later validated by the SHOM) is available on the REFMAR system data server at the following address : http:// refmar.shom.fr
Real-time data is made available in favour of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission programmes and can be viewed on its "Sea level station monitoring facility" website.
It can also be accessed on the Previmer demonstrator http:// previmer.org
