Samples of rocks and sediments on the submerged flanks of oceanic islands and seamounts

These data correspond to samples of rock and sediment collected on the flanks of oceanic islands and seamounts within the project of extension of the continental shelf of Portugal. During the multidisciplinary oceanographic campaigns carried out by the Portuguese Task Group for the Extension of the Continental Shelf (EMEPC), samples of rock and sediment were collected using the dredge and corer, respectively, or by the ROV Luso that allows the collection of samples by the robotic arm, and sediment using the corer or the suction sampler. The study of these samples allowed the geological characterization of the seabed as required for the Portuguese proposal of extension of the continental shelf, in accordance with Article 76º of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Purpose

A recolha destas amostras decorreu no âmbito das campanhas oceanográficas multidisciplinares realizadas pela EMEPC, e o seu estudo, permitiu a caracterização geológica do fundo marinho necessária para a proposta de Extensão da Plataforma Continental de Portugal, de acordo com o artigo 76º da Convenção das Nações Unidas sobre o Direito do Mar.

Statement

The rock and sediment data were collected in oceanographic campaigns carried out in 2007 on the R/V Kommandor Jack and since 2008 on the NRP Almirante Gago Coutinho, where the ROV Luso was installed by EMEPC. These campaigns took place at specific locations for the Continental Shelf Extension Project. Onboard of the R/V Kommandor Jack in 2007 the rock samples were collected with a dredge, while the sediments were collected using a 3 meter long gravity corer. Since 2008 sampling has been done with the ROV Luso, which is a remotely operated underwater vehicle prepared to reach 6000 meters depth. The ROV is equipped with an HD camera, which allows a more controlled collection of samples, because of the filming of the geological context where sampling takes place. The sediments are collected by the ROV Luso using either a corer or a suction sampler.The studied rock samples were analyzed using geochemical and/or isotopic analysis performed in certified laboratories, complemented with microscope petrographic observation of polished thin sections and the analysis of minerals using electron microprobe. The sediments were analyzed for their magnetic properties, granulometry and paleontological content.Some of this data is being used for the Extension of the Continental Shelf Project and is classified, while the remaining data from EMEPC, is available to the scientific community on request.
