ObsMer - Observation of catches at sea
The observation of catches at sea, whether landed or discarded by professional fishing vessels, provides a better understanding of the interactions between fishing activity, resources and marine ecosystems. This system, called ObsMer, is applied in metropolitan France, excluding Corsica.

Observation data on catches at sea by professional vessels, collected via the ObsMer system, contain: the characteristics of the fishing trip and the trades observed (gear-target species pair), the composition of the catches (landed and discarded) in size and weight by commercial and scientific species, and potential accidental catches.
The fishing trips observed are determined according to a sampling plan.
• Sampling plan(s) :
The sampling plan randomly determines the list of vessels to be observed.
It is stratified geographically, temporally (quarterly), by vessel size class and by fleet (passive or towed).
• Precision on the type of data :
Characteristic of the fishing trip: start and end dates of the fishing trip, characteristics of the gear used, landing and type of sale of the species landed, ...
Information by fishing operation (FO): coordinates of the fishing area, dates and times of start and end of the FO, trade practised (pair of gear and target species), environmental data, etc.
Catch composition: size and weight sampling by species of fish, molluscs and crustaceans marketed from the landed and discarded fractions.
Potential data on incidental catches of marine mammals, birds, reptiles and elamosbranchs and the presence of macro-waste.
• Observed or measured parameter(s) :
- Observation data.
- Measurements of individuals by species are made according to international standards.
- Specific operations may be carried out in the event of accidental captures of marine mammals, birds, reptiles and elamosbranchs.
• Resolution of the parameter(s) :
The data are banked by fishing trip (ship-date pair) and by fishing operation.
• Format(s) :
Within the ObsMer data, there are two types of data, in the same format :
- from 24/01/2003 to 13/12/2010 : historical data entered on the ObsMer software
- since 20/01/2009 : data entered on a software synchronised with the Harmonie database : Allegro.
The available data exist in the following formats : COST (RData) and COST/FREE1/FREE2.
