Bathymetric data collected on the scope of the PEPC

Bathymetric data collected on the scope of the portuguese continental shelf extension project, using multibeam echo sounder systems. These data were used to create digital terrain models that allowed the morphometric study of the seabed, in accordance with article 76 of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Purpose

Os dados de batimetria foram obtidos no âmbito do projecto de extensão da plataforma continental de Portugal, por forma a caracterizar morfometricamente o fundo submarino. Este tipo de caracterização é absolutamente essencial para definir os pontos pé do talude, elementos estruturais para a definição do limite exterior da plataforma continental extendida.

Statement

The bathymetric data were collected in oceanographic campaigns carried out since the beginning of 2005 in several vessels. All data were acquired using Kongsberg multibeam echosounder systems, models EM120 and EM710. During the acquisition process all the rules established in the standard S-44 of the International Hydrographic Organization to order 2 surveys were respected.After the acquisition, all data are processed using CARIS HIPS and Sips. During this process the corresponding outer envelope of each of the hydrographic surveys is digitized.The data provided by EMEPC corresponds to a coarse version of the original data that, until the end of the portugusese continental shelf extension project, is classified.The Hydrographic Zero (HZ.) is the reference plane used by EMEPC in data collection. In mainland Portugal the ZH. is established 2.00m below the average level of the adopted ocean (NMA) - Cascais 1938, if exception the port of Lisbon where it is considered the value of 2,08 m. In Madeira the ZH. located 1.40 m below the NMA for the tide station of the port of Funchal (Funchal, 1913).
